Tokyo Station cloak storage for bikes

When I went to Tokyo to attend a meeting, I needed to leave my bike somewhere near the station so that I could pick it up for further journey later on the day.  In non-metropolitan areas it is easy to find bike parking areas, but in central Tokyo it is not the case as you see Churin Kinshi 駐輪禁止 signs everywhere saying it is banned to park bicycles. If you ignore the sign, more often than not your bike will be taken away, and you would have to go through complicated procedures plus a fine to get your bike back.

Of course there are various bike parking lots, both public and private near the station.  Some are free and others charge fees.

This time I was carrying my bike in a bike bag as I arrived at Tokyo station by Shinkansen and was going to take the bike for another Shinkansen journey later in the evening after attending a meeting and some shopping.  It made sense to simply leave the bike in the bike bag to be stored safe somewhere within the station.  There are many coin lockers in the station, but obviously they are too small to store a bike even if I dismantled....  After some research and enquiries I found a solution.

In Tokyo Station there are two cloak service options where you can leave your bike.  One is within the JR ticket gates (ie you need to have JR train tickets to use this facility), the other is outside the ticket gate so anyone can use this service.  I use the former as this one is nearer the JR platforms I used.  It costed 600 yen for a day and I managed to strap my helmet and a bag of cycling clothes I did not need to the bike within the bike bag.  You can also use one of many coin lockers that are located throughout the station.
